 Death
Michigan
law required the registration of deaths with the state, starting in 1867.
Some death records, particularly those prior to 1897, were not filed with
the state, but they may be available at the county level.
Anyone is
eligible to order a copy of a Michigan death records. Death records can
be ordered from the Michigan
Department of Community Health.
The Genealogical
Death Indexing System provides free online access to early death records.
Data in GENDIS came from microfilmed death ledgers and was transcribed
by genealogists from Michigan's local genealogical societies. At present,
the database has 170,000 death records from 1867 to 1884.
The Michigan
Death Database, a project of the Michigan
Family History Network, has death information submitted by genealogists.
