Emmet County

First called Tonedagana, the county was created in 1840 from Mackinac County. In 1843, its name was changed to Emmet. County government was organized in 1853, with the seat established at Little Traverse. By 1867, the seat was changed to Charlevoix. It was changed again in 1869 to Harbor Springs and to Petoskey in 1902.
