Hillsdale County was created in 1829 from non-county area, including a part claimed by Ohio. County government was organized in 1835, with the seat established at Jonesville. In 1843, the seat was changed to Hillsdale. When Michigan became a state in 1837, the boundary dispute was settled in favor of Ohio.
