Land

Michigan was a "public land" state, which means the Federal Government disposed of the land in Michigan under the provisions of the Ordinance of 1785. "Land patents" are the documents that show the transfer of ownership from the federal or state government to individuals. Federal land patents for Michigan can be found online through the Bureau of Land Management Web site.

In addition, microfilms of federal and state land patents can be found at the Library of Michigan.

Land sales and transfers from the first owners to subsequent owners can be found in the Register of Deeds Office in the county in which the land is located.

For more information about land records, see Chapter 6 of Michigan Genealogy.
