Military
Military
records come in the form of rosters of military units, draft and discharge
papers, citations, pensions, and membership files of veterans' organizations.
In addition to information on an ancestor's military service, these records
can include such items as birthdates and places, death dates and places,
marital status, and a physical description of the soldier.
The largest
collection of unpublished military records in Michigan can be found at
the State Archives in Lansing. These records are described in circulars
prepared by staff at the archives.
There are
several published sources for Michigan military records, including Sue
Imogene Silliman's Michigan Military Records. Several online sources
are listed below.
