State census records

Ten State and Territorial Censuses were taken in Michigan between 1827 and 1904. Unfortunately, only a few of these records exist, and many of these can be found at the State Archives in Lansing. Other sources for state census records include the Library of Michigan in Lansing, the Burton Historical Collection at the Detroit Public Library, and the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. City, county and university libraries also may have
state census records in their genealogical or historical collections.

State census records do not list all family members until 1884. Prior to that year, the censuses list the head of the household, in some cases his occupation, plus the number of other males and females in the household in various age categories.

For more information about census records, see Chapter 5 of Michigan Genealogy.
